The new Liebherr mobile harbour crane LHM 600 high rise is ready for shipment from Rostock, Germany to Kingston, Jamaica

Liebherr Maritime Cranes has delivered its largest mobile harbour crane model in the Caribbean to Kingston Wharves in Jamaica. The LHM 600 has a taller than standard tower designed to simplify the handling of big container vessels up to Super-Post-Panamax size.

Kingston Wharves ordered the crane for its multi-purpose terminal in the Port of Kingston.

Its tower extension, putting the operator cabin at a height of 37 metres, is to ensure high visibility into deep cargo holds. A 12 m extension helps improve container handling efficiency, Liebherr said. With a maximum outreach of 58 m, twin lift capability and a capacity of 104 tonnes, the LHM 600 can service vessels up to 19 container rows wide and nine containers high.

Grantley Stephenson, Kingston Wharves chief executive officer, said, “This new machine is the next essential future investment in our terminal in order to handle the new generation of vessels that are heading for us in the course of the Panama Canal expansion. Our crane operators will be delighted with the impressive eye-level of more than 37 metres that comes along with the special tower extension. The LHM 600 – starting operation in October – will maximise our efficiencies, increase our responsiveness and, ultimately, meet our customer’s demands.”
