A.W. Leil invests in mega crane to meet renewable energy demand

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia-based A.W. Leil Cranes & Equipment has added one of the most powerful Canadian-owned cranes to its fleet, strengthening its ability to support renewable energy and heavy infrastructure projects across Atlantic Canada.

The company recently acquired a Liebherr LG1750-SX, a high-capacity lattice boom crane mounted on an 8-axle carrier. With a maximum lifting capacity of 850 tonnes and a boom reach of up to 172 metres, the machine is well-suited for wind turbine construction and other large-scale energy applications.

The new Liebherr LG1750-SX joins A.W. Leil’s fleet as one of the most powerful Canadian-owned cranes in the country.

“This latest investment brings world-class lifting power to our doorstep. It means developers can think bigger than ever before, knowing that the capability to support their most ambitious projects now exists right here at home,” said Ryan Long, president, A.W. Leil.

The LG1750-SX is designed for mobility between turbine locations, with a road-friendly 3-metre-wide footprint, significantly narrower than the 10-12 metre width of typical crawler cranes. This reduction in width can minimize environmental impact, accelerate project timelines and reduce site preparation costs.

“This crane is an investment in our team and it’s a team that I’m very proud to be part of,” added Long. “We have a very skilled and passionate group, which is a primary reason why we were confident in making this investment. This is about more than just lifting equipment — it’s about lifting the region’s potential, we’re ready for what’s next.”

As energy developments in offshore and onshore wind, hydrogen and energy storage gain traction throughout Atlantic Canada, demand for heavy lifting infrastructure continues to grow. The LG1750-SX gives A.W. Leil added capability to meet the demands of these emerging sectors.

The company also continues to expand its workforce and collaborates with local trade schools and the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 721, to train new professionals in crane operations and rigging.
