SPAIN: Transportes y Gruas Aguado in Spain used its 660 ton capacity Manitowoc Model 18000 crawler crane in Madrid to complete one of the largest machinery lifts in Europe, of a 386 ton, 49 foot diameter tunneling machine, known as Dulcinea. The tunneling machine is being used on the M-30, a project that is hoped will divert heavy traffic congesting Madrid's peripheral freeway into an underground system of tunnels.
Transportes y Gruas Aguado has 60 cranes in its fleet of 250 pieces of construction equipment. Juan Aguado Sr, general manager, said the Model 18000 had completed its inaugural lift with flying colors. “The Dulcinea lift is our first job with the Model 18000 and it has proved very successful,” he said. For the Dulcinea lift the 18000 was rigged with 148 feet of main boom. The machine is boring 3.5 km (2.2 miles) of tunnels under Madrid's streets.
