BKL deploys Liebherr flat top cranes on key A45 viaduct project

Construction of the new Rahmede Valley Bridge in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is progressing steadily with the help of two Liebherr 340 EC-B 16 flat top tower cranes supplied by BKL Baukran Logistik GmbH.

Work on the replacement viaduct began in October 2023 and is scheduled to continue through autumn 2025.

The 453 metre bridge is being built to replace the structurally unsound existing structure along the A45 motorway, a key north–south corridor also known as the Sauerland Line. The new viaduct will restore traffic flow on one of Germany’s busiest transport routes.

The two tower cranes, with 75 metre jibs and hook heights of 61 and 65 metres, were in use since the start of foundation work. They supported construction of the bridge’s eight main piers and continue to handle concrete pouring and deck slab assembly.

The Rahmede Valley Bridge spans a total length of 453 metres.

According to BKL, the cranes were selected for their stability, transport efficiency and ease of assembly, factors proving valuable on the confined jobsite. The EC-B series can be mobilised with just four transport units, and features such as Liebherr’s “Load Plus” function provide up to 20 per cent additional lifting capacity.

BKL supplied the cranes from its rental fleet of more than 700 units, while also handling technical planning, delivery, and on-site support. “The Rahmede Valley Bridge is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the region,” a company representative noted.

The cranes are expected to remain in place until project completion in 2025, supporting tasks from pier construction to steel pre-assembly and concrete placement.
