CIC extends operator certification programmes

The US Crane Institute Certification (CIC) is expanding its portfolio of crane operator programmes this spring and summer.

CIC has applied for re-accreditation by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) for five certified crane operator programmes. These are for: small, under 21 tons; medium, 21 to 75 tons; and large, over 75 tons telescoping boom cranes, and for lattice boom crawler/truck, and qualified rigger and signalperson. NCCA commissioners will meet in July to review the re-accreditation applications.

By August, CIC also plans to submit applications to NCCA for additional crane operator certifications: large lattice boom crawler/truck and telescoping boom over 300 tons.

Meanwhile, the organization is currently finalizing operator certification programmes for operators of digger derricks, articulating booms and service/mechanic trucks.

Three further programmes are in development, for tower cranes, lift directors and advanced rigger/signalpersons.

CIC has also been working with the BC Association for Crane Safety to develop a reciprocal crane operator certification. To meet British Columbia's requirements crane operators will also have to set up the crane during the practical exam and meet advanced rigging requirements. The pilot launch for this programme is scheduled for July.
