Crane overhauls give long-term pay off

Lifting work does not have to rely on brand new equipment, as highlighted in this case from Saudi Crane Services.

The company has now completed overhauling all 28 of the Grove cranes in its fleet, including rough terrain models and an 80 tonne capacity GMK4080 all terrain crane.

The newest units include nine RT765E-2 rough terrain cranes manufactured in 2011 and 2012, while the oldest is an RT522 rough terrain which dates back to 1990.

Long term operation

“We typically operate our Grove cranes for around 15 to 20 years before considering resale or trade-in, depending on condition and workload,” said Richard Gandar, general manager at Saudi Crane Services. “Because genuine spare parts remain readily available for all our Grove models, a full parts refresh made strong financial sense.”

Newly-installed components included hydraulics and control systems, structural elements, booms, air conditioning units and other can upgrades. It took between five and 10 weeks to complete the work on each crane.

The project was supported by Manitowoc, which supplied genuine OEM components to ensure the cranes can continue to deliver long-term reliability. For the 1990 RT522 Manitowoc supplied 100 % original parts.
