Giuffre Brothers provides specialized crane to Indy 500

Giuffre Brothers Cranes provided a specialized recovery crane/vehicle for the 2011 Indianapolis 500.

Mel Harder, head of operations at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, requested that Giuffre Brothers develop and fabricate a special crane and flatbed to lift, recover and clear disabled race cars from the track. As a result of the newly developed machine, Giuffree Brothers Cranes was named the "official boom truck" supplier for the race held on May 29, 2011.

The new Safety Recovery Vehicle is a Giuffre/Fassi hydraulic crane mounted on a Ford F750 chassis with a 20-foot flat bed. The flat bed features special vehicle safety tie downs and emergency alert lighting.

"As longtime supporters of and partners with the Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway, my brother Frank and I are committed to helping make the race environment safer for the drivers and the fans," said Dominic Giuffre, president of Giuffre Brothers Cranes, Inc.

The recovery vehicle was designed to provide safer recovery of racecars while avoiding spilling vehicle fluids on the race track, a safer environment for the safety crews and less damage to the disabled vehicle.

The famed Indianapolis 500 racing event, long referred to as "the greatest spectacle in racing" celebrated its 100th running in 2011. The event, often reported as the largest single-day sporting event in the world, draws an estimated 400,000 fans every year and garners national media coverage.
