Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) in the UK has launched a new guidance document on ground conditions for construction plant.

The document, Ground Conditions for Construction Plant, provides guidance on the assessment of ground conditions and the measures that can be taken to both improve ground and reduce loads imposed on the ground, a spokesperson said.

Failure of the ground on which construction plant stands and moves is a cause of minor incidents and near misses on sites. Ground failure is also the cause of a significant number of serious injuries and fatalities.

The topic of ground engineering can be complex and in some cases it is necessary for construction personnel to consult an expert geotechnical or structural engineer. The new guidance covers ground bearing pressures and loadings from mobile plant, assessment and engineering of the ground’s capability to withstand the loadings. The guidance also addresses coordination of duties, with reference to CDM and to Temporary Works.

The document is available from www.cpa.uk.net/sfpsg/#Groundconditions
