Congress has authorized a seventh extension, for 30 days, of the existing Federal Highway bill that was scheduled to expire in June. Both the House and the Senate have approved their own versions of a new Highway Bill, but the two are still around $11 billion apart with the Senate bill higher at $295 billion. President Bush has threatened to veto anything over the House's $283.9 billion spending level. A conference committee must resolve the differences between the two bills before the legislation can go to the president for his final approval.
