Mammoet moves wind turbine blades

Dutch international heavy lift specialist Mammoet has transported three 94 metre long wind turbine blades for wind power supplier Siemens Gamesa. Mammoet transported the blades from a storage area at the Siemens Gamesa factory in Aalborg, Denmark, to a quayside one kilometre away. The wind blades are destined for a new prototype wind turbine that Siemens Gamesa will be testing.

Mammoet opted to transport the blades using a custom trailer comprising 2 x 6 Nicolas MDEL axle lines combined with a four-axle truck. It chose to use this thanks to the stability it provided throughout the journey. The total length of the new trailer combination with the blade was more than 100 metres.

The trailer itself was built with conventional axle lines at Mammoet’s yard in Brande, Denmark, and then transported in one piece to the storage area in Aalborg. From there Mammoet transported the blades directly to the vessel for loading, thus avoiding having to store them at the quay.
