Sarens supports NASA Artemis infrastructure

Sarens has supported construction and assembly work tied to NASA’s Artemis program at the Kennedy Space Center, contributing heavy lift and transport expertise to upgrades of key launch and processing facilities.

Sarens has supported construction and assembly work tied to NASA’s Artemis program at the Kennedy Space Center.

The work is part of NASA’s broader effort to prepare infrastructure for the Artemis program, which is focused on returning humans to the Moon and supporting future missions to Mars. Facilities under development are designed to handle the agency’s Space Launch System rockets and associated hardware.

Sarens began work on the project in 2022 under a contract awarded by Bechtel, NASA’s lead contractor. The company worked alongside Bechtel and NASA on planning and execution across multiple phases of the project.

Scope of work included the offloading and staging of prefabricated steel trusses delivered by barge to Cape Canaveral. Sarens managed roll-off operations and positioning of the structures for corrosion protection and later assembly.

Module transport and tower installation

The company also supported base structure assembly using a fleet that included an M2250 crawler crane with Maxer attachment, an LR 1350, and self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). These operations were completed in mid-2023 and enabled continued development of the launch infrastructure.

Additional work involved jacking operations using a climbing jack system to position large structural components, as well as module construction and installation. Sarens assembled large modules and electrical rooms at an offsite yard before transporting them several miles for final installation.

For tower assembly, Sarens deployed a CC 8800 crawler crane equipped with boom booster and superlift configuration to install major structural elements. The lifts were carried out under tight scheduling requirements and supported by specialized rigging systems.

The work supports infrastructure tied to future Artemis missions, including Artemis II, as NASA advances preparations for crewed lunar exploration.
