Tadano to develop electric RT crane

Tadano is developing what it claims as the world’s first electric rough terrain crane, due for launch in late 2023.

The crane will be able to drive to jobsites and complete all lifting operations using battery or electric power, rather than diesel, in a fully zero-emissions operation.

The company said the electric motor will emit lower noise, an advantage for urban areas with noise ordinances. It also means work can continue at night and with indoor projects.

This announcement follows the company’s environmental target proposal, which included a 25 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emission from business activities, and a 35 % reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from product use by 2030. Tadano also said it aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Sustainable division

The company has gathered its sustainable solutions under the name Tadano Green Solutions (TGS). This includes the ability of most of its cranes to be operated with reduced-emissions fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) without modification, and its E-Pack. The E-Pack is already available in Europe and will soon be launched in Japan.

“We have set aggressive goals for lowering both operational and product emissions, and we will partner with industry leading companies to attain those goals,” said Toshiaki Ujiie, Tadano president and CEO.
