The incoming President of the United States, Donald Trump, has put construction at the top of his agenda in his victory speech.

Clearly striking a chord with the American people, not only did the hotel magnate beat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, but his Republican party also importantly retained control of the House of Representatives and its majority in the US Senate, enshrining at least two years of single-party rule in Washington.

This would seem to give Trump the mandate he requires to follow through on some of his campaign rhetoric, including many ambitious plans for rebuilding the country’s dilapidated infrastructure.

In his victory speech, Trump said: “We are going to fix our inner cities and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals. We're going to rebuild our infrastructure, which will become, by the way, second to none, and we will put millions of our people to work as we rebuild it.”

Within his first 100 days in office, Trump has promised to cancel all payments to UN climate change programmes and use that money to fix US infrastructure.

He has also controversially described the building of a wall on the country’s southern border with Mexico.
