Crane manufacturer Liebherr delivered a new 500 tonne crawler crane to Weldex as part of a deal for five cranes.

The lattice boom LR 1500 was commissioned as soon as possible after delivery and put straight to work. It was the second crawler crane in a deal for five units between 150 and 700 tonnes capacity for the UK’s largest crawler crane rental company.

Weldex ordered the 500 tonner with an 84 metre boom and 30 metre derrick system, “offering a highly versatile configuration for complex lifting operations,” the manufacturer said.

Commenting on his latest acquisition Iain McGilvray, Weldex managing director, said, “We have a long-standing relationship with Liebherr which dates back to the 1990s. The combination of class-leading cranes and excellent after-sales back-up from the factory and the Liebherr Great Britain team provided us with the confidence to purchase this latest package of cranes.”

Other cranes in the order are a 150 tonne capacity LTR 1150 telescopic boom crawler with 52 metre boom, and a 300 tonne LR 1300.1, already delivered. Arriving later will be another LR 1300.1 and a 700 tonne capacity LR 1700-1.0.

The LR 1300.1s were ordered with 74 metres of main boom. Adding a 35 metre fixed jib gives a hoisting height of 109 metres.

Weldex was started in 1979 by the McGilvray family in Scotland. It now serves customers throughout the UK and international markets. Its crawler cranes range in capacity from 5 to 1,350 tonnes.
