Moving a large Liebherr crawler crane for a wind turbine erection project in Southern Germany was a job done with the help of specialized transporters from Cometto.

German lifting and transport specialist Wiesbauer needed a way to move its Liebherr LR 11000 lattice boom crawler crane between turbine sites on a wind farm. The Rugendorf wind farm in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, consists of four large turbines.

After erecting a turbine the crawler crane was dismantled, moved and reassembled at the next location. For the move Wiesbauer used its Cometto MSPE self propelled transporters in a 14-axle combination. This was used to carry the 1,000 tonne capacity crawler crane’s 42 metre-long derrick mast which weighed 60 tonnes.

“The time saving we achieved was the reason we chose this means of transport,” said, Jochen Wiesbauer about his company’s project. It was found to be a faster solution than other potential transport options, Wiesbauer explained. There were some tight bends on the route but, “The Cometto vehicles impress with their flexibility and manoeuvrability,” said Wiesbauer.

The Wiesbauer fleet includes 20 Cometto MSPE axle lines with an axle load of 48 tonnes and two power pack units with an output of 202 kW each.
