Aviv Carmel: visionary innovator and leader in tower crane technology

A visionary innovator and leader with a career defined both by technical mastery and a clear vision. As co-founder and chairman of Skyline Cockpit, part of Skyline Cranes, Carmel has not only helped shape Israel’s urban skyline but also reimagined the future of tower crane operation.

Carmel’s roots in construction run deep. He started in the industry as a teenager alongside his father, who worked for Solel Boneh, one of Israel’s pioneering construction companies. Those early days on job sites sparked a fascination with cranes which later grew into a vocation. By the 1980s Carmel was already immersed in the tower crane business, accumulating the technical expertise and innovative instincts defining his career.

In 2004, with partners Baruch and Guy Parnes, Carmel co-founded Skyline Cranes and Technologies, now Israel’s largest tower crane rental company. From modest beginnings, Skyline built a fleet of around 200 cranes, servicing hundreds more for clients nationwide. The company became a partner for the country’s most ambitious construction projects, from high-rise residential towers and commercial centres, to hospitals, stadiums, and defence facilities.

A technological system

Under Carmel’s technical leadership as chief consultant and head of research and development, Skyline has earned a reputation for precision, reliability, and innovation.

As Israel’s cities reach for the sky, Skyline has been there at every level. “The average building height in Israel has almost doubled in the last decade,” Carmel once commented, “…and with it, the tower crane has evolved from a jobsite tool into a technological system.”

Skyline responded to the challenge by developing advanced engineering solutions and patented systems for climbing, anchoring, and dismantling cranes on skyscrapers up to 200 metres tall. Iconic projects, including the Shachar Tower, Alon Towers, and Midtown Tel Aviv, are testaments to Skyline’s engineering ingenuity.

Carmel’s vision extends beyond mechanical innovation. Always one to see opportunity where others see limitation, he asked a deceptively simple question, “If everything were possible, what would I change about tower cranes?”

Remote working

An answer was Skyline Cockpit, a revolutionary system enabling cranes to be operated remotely from the ground, in a simulator-style control room. By merging robotics, sensor technology, data analytics, and real-time imaging, Skyline Cockpit transforms crane operation into a safer, smarter, and more efficient process.

Operators can now control multiple cranes from a single cockpit, even across cities, improving safety while reducing costs and fatigue. Carmel describes this as moving from “the tower crane as a machine” to “the tower crane as a scanner”. It becomes a data-rich node in the construction ecosystem.

This innovation has been noticed internationally. Presenting at KHL Group’s International Tower Cranes Conference (ITC) in 2017 and again in 2021, Carmel articulated a vision that resonated with peers worldwide: the integration of automation, data, and human expertise to create a connected, intelligent jobsite.

Skyline’s systems have already been deployed on live projects, signalling the future he envisioned is no longer distant – it is already here.

Wider industry

Beyond his company roles, Carmel is chairman of the Tower Crane Companies Association, working on behalf of the Israeli Chamber of Commerce and Industry, guiding industry standards and fostering innovation across the sector. His influence bridges tradition and transformation, all rooted in decades of field experience yet always directed at progress.

Inventing the feeder

The feeder is a tool born from necessity and imagination. Aviv Carmel saw a problem the industry had not yet solved: how not only to lift materials, but to feed them directly into the building.

For several years he developed the concept in his mind and through models made from the Danish construction toy Lego, turning an abstract idea into something tangible. The breakthrough came during a major project, when a client facing a critical challenge turned to him and said, in effect: bring us “that thing of yours” within two months. Aviv delivered.

What began as a personal idea and a Lego prototype became the first feeder, initially built from a tower crane jib, later evolving into the dual shaft feeder, capable of serving two buildings simultaneously. From a sketch of an idea to a working solution in the field, it became a patented innovation and a defining example of Aviv’s ability to turn vision into reality.
