Sarens Supports Algeria’s Energy Ambitions with Precision Heavy Lifting at Tinrhert Gas Field

Sarens has successfully completed a high-stakes heavy lifting project in Algeria’s remote southeastern desert, supporting the full development of the Tinrhert gas fields at Alrar (EPC2–Lot1). Commissioned by Petrofac on behalf of national energy company Sonatrach, the project ran from March to July 2025 and involved the installation of 11 pieces of heavy equipment, critical to the region’s gas infrastructure.

This project showcased Sarens Algérie’s ability to deliver under some of the most challenging site conditions: confined lifting zones, intense heat exceeding 50°C, sandstorms, and logistical obstacles presented by the isolated desert location.

At the heart of the operation were two cranes: the 600T CC-2800 crawler crane (configured with a 54-metre main boom) and the versatile AC-140. Both were transported overland from Sarens’ base in Oran—a 1.600km journey taking up to 10 days. Their assembly on site took another 10 days, with the AC-140 playing a supporting role.

The primary lift involved the fire water tank roof: a 4-metre-high, 88,9-tonne structure lifted at a 30,9-metre radius. Due to spatial constraints, the CC-2800 was required to both slew and crawl with the load to precisely position components—an operation executed under strict safety protocols and detailed lift planning.

Sarens Algérie was chosen for this contract thanks to its longstanding reputation in Algeria, where it combines local know-how with the global standards and engineering precision expected from international clients. Planning focused on crane stability in sandy conditions, detailed lifting paths, and constant HSE oversight, including hydration protocols and protective measures against dust and heat. To maintain operational continuity in the extreme climate, Sarens implemented on-site mechanical support and used dust- and heat-resistant equipment.

Importantly, the project is still ongoing. In anticipation of heavier lifts ahead, Sarens has just mobilised a second crawler crane—a 400-tonne Terex Demag CC2400-1—on site. This additional crane will support the upcoming installation of two columns, each weighing 411 tonnes.

Beyond technical achievement, the project carries strategic importance for the country. The development of the Tinrhert gas fields is expected to boost domestic energy security, support local industry, attract international investment, and create much-needed employment in the region.

A skilled and experienced Sarens team oversaw every aspect of the work—from planning and engineering to transport and site operations. The crew on-site included crane operators, a lifting supervisor, a health and safety supervisor, and project leads coordinating closely with the client.

The project was delivered safely and efficiently, contributing to the progress of an important national energy development—and with more critical lifts ahead, Sarens remains fully committed on site.
