Mammoet to assist in Olympic Stadium roof replacement

Mammoet has been selected to support Groupe Construction Pomerleau-Canam (GCPC) in the replacement of Montreal’s Olympic Stadium roof, a complex engineering project requiring precision lifting and heavy machinery.

GCPC—a consortium comprising Pomerleau and Canam Group—was awarded the contract to replace the stadium’s existing roof with a fixed, transparent glass structure designed to allow more natural light inside. The project involves demolishing the aging roof and installing the new canopy using advanced lifting technology.

The new roof will be assembled inside the stadium on temporary supports before being lifted into position. Mammoet’s Mega Jack 5200 system—a high-capacity jacking system used for raising some of the world’s heaviest loads—will lift the structure 50 meters into place. The lift will be executed using six Mega Jack towers, with strand jacks providing additional stabilization.

To ensure precise alignment, Mammoet has designed specialized adjustment devices that will sit atop each lifting tower. These miniature skidding tracks will allow for fine-tuned positioning once the roof reaches its final height. The structure will remain elevated on the jacking system for two months while crews complete the final installation, including connecting it to Montreal’s iconic inclined tower, La Tour de Montréal.

“We lift heavy objects all the time, but ensuring our solution aligns with how the roof will ultimately be connected adds a unique challenge,” said Justin Hope, project manager, Mammoet. “That’s why we developed a custom engineering approach for this project.”
