Tower crane foundations was also the focus during the first round table discussion

Providing consistent guidelines for tower crane foundations is the main purpose of a new FEM position paper, Arnaud Miton explained at the ITC 2015 conference in London.
"The paper has been launched due to evolving standards and regulations in the tower crane industry," Miton explained. He went on to provide examples of crane erection, including wind effects on tower cranes and how this effects the foundation.
Miton also discussed issues to take into consideration include maximum loads, in-service and out of service loads. He pointed out how dead weight is a variable load and not a constant.
The FEM guidelines on concrete block foundations take into account cranes on a chassis or on shallow foundations. In addition, it is proposing further guidelines on foundations for permanent tower crane installation.
In conclusion, Miton expressed that it is the responsibility of the crane manufacturer to analyse all governing load combinations and to provide maximum resulting crane loads. In addition, it is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that the tower crane support is properly designed considering the resulting crane loads provided.
The conference, organised by KHL Group and International Cranes and Specialized Transport magazine, opened today in London, attended by more than 220 delegates.
