UK heavy haulage specialist Allelys has transported two historic boats from the country’s Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton to the Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower in Gosport.

HMS MTB 71, was a 15 tonne, 18 metre long motor torpedo boat (MTB71) and is said to be the last wartime vessel of its kind in existence. The second, CMB 331, was the last surviving Thornycroft coastal motor boat, also weighing 15 tonnes and is 17 metres long. Both were commissioned in 1941 during the early part of the Second World War.

The boats were stored on frames and Allelys used these to jack up the vessels using climbing jacks. They were then transported using 4 axle Goldhofer extendable trailers. Once on site, the boats were jacked up off the trailers and lowered onto skates and moved into the building to their final positions.

Zac Smout, project manager at Allelys, said, “It is always great to be involved in a project like this where the loads being transported have so much history.”
