Three workers were killed on Friday 30 May and two others injured when two dockside gantry cranes collapsed at a shipbuilding yard in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area, China, according to local media.

The two 600 tonne capacity gantry cranes at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group collapsed shortly after midnight while lifting cargo, the Shanghai Safety Production and Supervision Administration said. According to the Shanghai Daily, the administration has sent an investigation team to the accident site.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, the country’s leading ship manufacturer, said Shanghai Daily.

On Monday, financial web site Bloomberg reported that shares in the world’s second biggest shipbuilder, Samsung Heavy Industries Co, rose 3% with the expectation that its South Korean shipyards will attract orders following the accident in China.
