Desert heavy haul

Integrated Logistics Company of Kuwait has delivered two large and heavy refinery components to a gas treatment facility about 50 km from Kuwait City.

The first component weighed 160 tonnes and was 7 metres in diameter, 14 metres long. The second component was 180 tonnes, 10 metres in diameter and 16 metres long.

Integrated Logistics used 12 axle lines of Goldhofer THP/SL 12 (1+1) parallel-coupled combination and a THP/SL (1+1/2) 12 axle combination at one-and-a-half-times vehicle width.

The route stretched over 50 km, of which 5 km was on paved roads and the remaining 45 km on desert sand. Accompanying the transport team on the project was Goldhofer service technician Stefan Klatschek.

Loading, readying the components for transport, and crossing the sandy terrain took four days. The route was challenging and the convoy was forced to battle its way through sand drifts. Sometimes they had to use a wheel loader and a grader to dig them out. Other times the crew had to use this equipment plus shovels to get the convoy moving.
