Developing the next generation of load cell engineers

A new partnership in India will see establishment of a programme of industrial training to help develop the next generation of load cell engineers.

IPA India and JSS Academy of Technical Education (JSSATE) signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop an education programme in Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), in the south Indian state of Karnataka.

IPA Weighing and Automation manufactures load cells, sensors and weighing systems. Managing director Kurian Abraham signed the agreement, reinforcing the company’s commitment to closing the gap between academic engineering education and real-world industry practice, the company said. IPA has been going almost 50 years.

Practical experience

Precisely weighing loads and measuring force is a difficult discipline to learn by theory alone. JSSATE students and lecturers will spend time at IPA getting hands-on experience of the disciplines underpinning precision force measurement, IPA explained. Topics will include load cell design, calibration and strain gauging.

“Rather than a one-way placement scheme, the partnership is structured as genuine faculty-industry collaboration. Lecturers as well as students will engage directly with IPA’s engineering teams, ensuring that what’s taught on campus stays connected to what’s practised on the factory floor,” said David Ayling, IPA Board advisor – global strategy and European market development.
