Elliott boom truck modified for salt mine work
14 September 2010
An Elliott Equipment Company 30105R boom truck has been modified to work in salt mining operations 1,550 feet (470 metres) below ground. The truck-mounted crane was delivered to North American Salt Mine Company by Scott Powerline, based in Louisiana, USA.
Elliott Equipment engineers worked closely with North American Salt's user group, modifying the 30105R by adding a specialized 1,000 pound (454 kg) hydraulic drill attached to an 800 pound (363 kg) capacity, remote controlled steel work platform, according to the boom truck manufacturer. The customized system offers two miners the ability to move close to the mine face and drill from within the work platform, saving time and money.
The entire boom truck was disassembled above ground and reassembled deep within the mine. Elliott Equipment said this was done because of the minimal number of fittings in the design of the crane.
