Ferris wheel assembly completed with Tadano knuckle boom cranes

Limited space is a problem on many lift sites, where larger machines cannot manoeuvre into the ideal position to complete the necessary operation.

As reported by Tadano, limited space was the problem facing Italian lift specialist Top Noleggio as the company assisted with assembly of a large Ferris wheel. Located in close proximity to other fairground attractions, it was impossible to position larger cranes to carry out the work.

To complete the job, the company used two knuckle boom cranes from the Tadano PM Series, a PM 100SP and PM 150 SP. Mounted on the back of small trucks, the two machines could be positioned within the constricted space to complete the entire assembly process.

“The use of two cranes was essential, as the site conditions did not allow efficient operation with just one machine,” reported the team from Top Noleggio. “This setup enabled us to complete the assembly safely and with the required level of accuracy.”

One of the most critical aspects of the operation was alignment of anchor pins with structural components of the wheel. These must be accurate to the millimetre to ensure total safety.

Combining outreach and top capacity with remote radio control allowed the operators to position themselves next to the structure to oversee each movement.

The cranes were reported to have delivered ‘excellent performance’ throughout the lift, with no related issues. Their manoeuvrability and precise control facilitated accurate positioning of the Ferris wheel components, making assembly faster, safer and more efficient.
