In its mid-year review of the construction industry in China, UK-based specialist forecasting and market research company Off-Highway Research (OHR) reported strong growth for the first half of 2018, with the mobile crane sector doing particularly well.

OHR found, of all the product sectors analysed, the mobile cranes sector recorded the largest year-on-year growth, of 76 per cent, in the first six months. It attributed this to strong demand for truck mounted cranes (especially in the 2-25 tonne class) which accounted for 94 per cent of total market demand.

According to Chris Sleight, managing director of OHR, “We expect mobile crane sales to hit 27,500 units in 2018, up 43% on 2017 and about three times what they were in 2016.”

OHR said demand has been driven by the on-going infrastructure projects nationwide, and buoyant urban construction. Another increasingly important factor is the intensified legislation of emission controls which has accelerated the replacement of elderly fleets.
