HMF kit to turn a crane into a MEWP
08 July 2025

Danish crane manufacturer HMF has a new personnel basket conversion kit to turn a crane into a mobile elevating work platform.
It takes just minutes to switch between the two, HMF said, helping to make it a practical ‘plug and play’ proposition. In confined spaces where a crane is operating and there is no space for scaffolding, or if higher reach is needed, it can provide a quick and easy solution.
The basket which weighs 110 kg, is rated for a maximum load of 200 kg, or two people plus 40 kg of tools.
While HMF has offered a personnel basket option before for its cranes this latest version complies with the EN 280 standard and includes integration with HMF’s electronic vehicle stability (EVS) system.
Operation is via an HMF remote control transmitter located on a bracket in the basket. A self levelling function is automatically initiated when the basket is installed to keep it upright. Up to 5 degrees out of level in the terrain can also be accommodated during set up. The EVS calculates the available capacity and capability even without fully extended outriggers, allowing set up in narrow or asymmetrical spaces.

Safety systems
An emergency lowering system is included. It consists of an electrically driven hydraulic pump with a restrictor valve already on the main boom cylinder of the crane. Lowering the basket is possible even with the crane’s main systems off or if they have failed.
The new basket is compatible with multiple variants of 11 sizes of HMF crane from the 6.1 tonne-metre 710K-RCS with two extensions, giving a reach of 7.1 metres, up to the 42.4 tonne-metre model 5020-K8 with eight extensions, giving a 21.45 metre outreach.
