Modulift Design & Consultancy (MDC) played a key role in the construction of the White Horse Bridge at the new Wembley sports stadium in the UK. Four giant arches, weighing a total of 420 tonnes were lifted into place, with help from the Modulift Spreader System.

Working with MSD Darlington Ltd, Cleveland Bridge and Abnormal Load Engineering (ALE), MDC supplied a modular crane spreader system, with beam sections of varying lengths combined for different sized arches. The arches weighed between 120 and 156 tonnes and required spreader lengths of 15, 29.8 and 30.6 m, each with an eccentric centre of gravity.

The four spreaders were made from a single Modulift spreader set. “Modulift is a range of unique modular spreader beams that are made up of several components bolted together to make a single beam of any size,” said Nick Latham, MDC director.

The White Horse Bridge will be used by football fans to reach the new Wembley Stadium. It is 50 m long, 25 m wide and uses 830 tonnes of steel.
