Liebherr cranes assist rooftop install on Zaragoza’s Torre del Agua

A Liebherr 110 EC-B 6 FR.tronic tower crane from Grúas Cerezo was installed on the roof of the Torre del Agua in Zaragoza, Spain at approximately 80 metres to support renovation of the 76-metre Expo 2008 landmark.

A flat-top configuration was required to keep total height below 100 metres. Grúas Cerezo Managing Director Miguel Cerezo said the structural preparation of the roof was the primary challenge, with crane loads needing to transfer precisely onto one of the building’s two load-bearing vertical support pillars.

Grúas El Portillo provided a Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 – the company’s second and its first deployment – to erect the tower crane. Commercial director Manuel García said the 700-tonne machine with hydraulically adjustable jib was selected following a joint site inspection that assessed working radii and crane configurations. The tower crane operated at a working height of 113 metres, lifting six tonnes at a 54-metre radius.

The €6 million renovation, commissioned by the Aragón regional government through Expo Zaragoza Empresarial, includes technical refurbishment, regulatory upgrades, a 360-degree glazed viewing platform, upgraded catering areas, and new ground-floor multifunctional spaces. Contractor San José is carrying out the work.
