Major upgrade for port’s Liebherr STS cranes
15 July 2024
A trio of cranes at Port Liberty (formerly Global Container Terminals) in New York, USA, have been future-proofed as part of a major upgrade programme.
Ship to shore container cranes in ports can be upgraded to handle larger vessels by being made taller and given more outreach. That is what Liebherr’s Transform division did to three of the four STS cranes at Port Liberty, with the fourth to follow.
The Liebherr engineers increased the lifting height of the STS cranes by 8.6 metres and added 5 metres to the outreach. Port Liberty can now offer a better service to its customers.
Adding height and reach
To increase the height Liebherr used a patented jacking system, where the STS crane’s end carriage is used as a stable base for jacking. A benefit of this method is that less additional equipment is needed. An important element of this type of project is for it to not intrude on the normal operation of the port. Being able to work faster also minimises the downtime.
The Liebherr Transform division offer an upgrade and modification service with the aim of making cranes “stronger, faster, smarter, greener, and ultimately better.”
Liebherr Container Cranes is based in Killarney, Ireland. Ship to shore cranes rubber tyred gantry cranes and straddle carriers are manufactured there. Opened in 1958, it was the first Liebherr factory outside Germany.
