A Vanson tower crane has found an unusual industrial application at a fishing net refurbishment and cleaning company in Scotland.

The MR108+3 city crane has been set in a central position at W & J Knox, where it is used to swing the used nets into industrial washers, before lifting them out into the sterilising unit. Finally, the nets are moved into the ‘clean area' ready for repair work.

“Prior to the purchase of the crane Knox used forklift trucks to lift the heavy nets and cages from the sealed containers. As these nets have an overall depth of 30 m, this whole process proved to be extremely awkward and inefficient,” says Roger Dehany, director and general manager.

The crane's tasks also extend to odour control. “We have a problem with odour, due to the process of decomposition on the fouling attached to nets. Being situated at the centre of town and adjacent to a supermarket we needed to do something,” added Finlay Oma, operational manager.

To alleviate the problem, Knox installed a manifold with an atomising spray head on the crane boom, which it uses to pump out perfume.
