Palfinger Marine has been commissioned to deliver 25 stiff boom cranes to Japan’s most recent large scale offshore wind project, the Kitakyusyu-Hibikinada Offshore Wind Farm.

The wind farm is located near the port of Hibikinada and is a joint venture between Penta Ocean Construction (POC) and Nippon Steel Engineering (NSE).

Deliveries of the cranes are expected to begin in 2024.

The design of the stiff boom cranes, with an outreach of 8 meters, has been adapted to meet the offshore wind service crane requirements including the EN13852-3 standard, Palfinger said.

The wind farm is scheduled to start commercial operations in 2025 and will create around 220 megawatts of energy.

“The cooperation between POC and NSE is an important project for our next steps on the Japanese market and shows our dedication to growing our presence there,” said Gunther Fleck, vice president sales and service region marine at Palfinger.

Palfinger Marine also provided equipment to Japan’s first large scale commercial wind power project, the Akita Noshiro wind farm, in 2020.
