In the UK, North London waste management company J. O’Doherty has bought a new Volvo STGO Cat 2 plated FH 6x4 tractor unit for heavy haulage duties and a 540hp FMX 6x4 tractor unit for moving household waste within London and the surrounding counties. The company made the purchases as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations and said that the majority of its truck fleet comprises Volvo vehicles. “We pretty much started out with Volvo and today the reliability and appearance of the trucks means there’s really no need to look elsewhere,” commented J. O’Doherty’s transport manager, Matt Tyler.

The FH is predominantly being used to move the company’s excavators and wheeled loaders between sites, although it will occasionally be used to move contractors’ machines weighing up to 70 tonnes. The truck is powered by a six-cylinder 12.8 litre D13K engine producing 540hp and up to 2600Nm of torque and it features a heavy duty front bumper. The cab is a standard Volvo Globetrotter cab with a single bunk and leather upholstery.

Behind the Volvo FH cab is a four-axle, rear-steer extending-bed low loader from Faymonville. However, J. O’Doherty specified the FH with larger fuel and hydraulic tanks. According to Tyler, “the hydraulic tanks give us the flexibility to use the FH in conjunction with a range of trailers, so when it is not on low-loader duties it can be put to service with a walking floor or tipper.””

The other vehicle, the new Volvo FMX 6x4 tractor unit, is coupled to a Titan trailer with a walking floor from US conveyor specialist Keith Manufacturing. It will be used for the movement of general household waste within London and surrounding counties.

“We really like the Volvo product, the safety features, the build quality and the styling. The current generation trucks simply stand out. They look like they mean business and they live up to their looks,” added Tyler.
