A pair of harbour cranes have been commissioned at the Italian port of Civitavecchia near Rome.

Civitavecchia Fruit & Forest Terminal (CFFT) purchased a new diesel-electric Konecranes Gottwald Model 5 mobile harbour crane and one used mobile harbour crane from Konecranes. Both will be used to help handle the expanding fruit handling business. Loads will include reefer containers and palletised fruit.

The new Model 5 two-rope crane lifts 125 tonnes and offers a maximum outreach of 51 metres. The other crane offers a 150 tonne lifting capacity and also a 51 m outreach.

Commenting on his purchase, Steven Clerckx, CFFT managing director, said, “Our long-term strategy foresees the successive expansion of our infrastructure to strengthen our position as a leading terminal for importing bananas and pineapples to Italy. As the backbone of this infrastructure, we have now opted for an impressive solution based on a new and a used crane from Konecranes. The benefits include immediate availability of the cranes, which will lead to improved quayside handling capacity in the short-term.”

Features of the new Model 5 are designed to allow handling of more cargo and improve safety. Included are a lifting height limiting function and a landside lowering function. A remote access function allows remote monitoring to help determine maintenance needs.
