Schoeman boosts capability with Grove AT

The Grove GMK4100L-2 will help Schoeman improve efficiency and reduce costs.

South Africa’s Schoeman Crane Hire has strengthened its fleet with a new four-axle Grove GMK4100L-2 all terrain crane, replacing a five-axle model from another brand.

The Pietermaritzburg-based company selected the GMK4100L-2 for its compact design, extended 60-meter main boom and strong load charts which are all key advantages for frequent work inside factories and on infrastructure projects. The new crane offers 10 meters more reach than its predecessor and delivers easier access in confined spaces.

“Bridge beam lifts are generally eight tonnes at an 18-meter radius, which the GMK4100L-2 will handle with a smile when working with 26 tonnes of counterweight,” said Ernst Veldsman, director, Schoeman Crane Hire. “Another common pick is lifting a 10-tonne recuperator at a 12-meter radius inside a factory, which we can easily manage with 5.6 tonnes of counterweight. These also enable us to come in at just under 12 tonnes per axle, which helps with transport permits. Having one less axle than our previous crane means lower permit costs.”

The GMK4100L-2’s single-engine design reduces maintenance requirements, while its fuel efficiency and ECO mode help counter rising diesel prices. The crane has already been deployed on major projects including the N3 highway upgrade and the Willowton Oil and Cake Factory. It has also supported work at sugar mills, sawmills, an aluminum plant and the Port of Durban. Schoeman Crane Hire plans to further standardize its fleet around Grove cranes to simplify operations and strengthen its relationship with local dealer CLT.
