In Memoriam: Daniel N. Wolff, 1946-2024

Daniel Norman Wolff, age 77, of Lincoln (formerly Waverly) died peacefully on January 15, 2024. He was born on December 10, 1946 in Tecumseh, NE to Norman and Arlene (Roseman) Wolff.

Wolff joined National Crane in Waverly, NE in 1971 as a mechanical engineer and retired in 2011 after serving as the vice president of engineering. During his tenure, he led the development of many industry-leading crane models, product safety & reliability advancements, the relocation of National Crane to Shady Grove, PA after the Manitowoc acquisition in 2002 and mentored numerous engineers.

Wolff was very active in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B30 Crane Safety Codes and Standards beginning in 1976, going on to serve as the chairperson for the development of the B30.22 articulating cranes volume. He was also a member of the B30.5 Mobile Cranes, B30.23 personnel handling subcommittees, and B30 main committees. Wolff stepped down in 2018, becoming an honorary ASME member and was recognized for his contributions to the enhancement of public safety through the development and promotion of ASME safety codes and standards.

His contributions to crane design and safety in their use will have an impact on the industry for generations to come.

Wolff was preceded in death by his father and mother, Norman and Arlene Wolff; sister, Gloria Wolff; brother, James Wolff; daughter-in-law, Marthe Wolff; and parents-in-law, Gerald and Evelyn TeKolste. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughter, Danielle Wolff of Los Angeles, CA; son, Mark Wolff (Jill) and grandson, August of Atlanta, GA; brother, David Wolff (Peggy) of Columbus, NE; sister-in-law, Roxie (Ken) Timms of Firth, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.
