Liebherr LRT 1090-2.1 joins Alpha Welding fleet in remote Alaska
09 July 2025

Alpha Welding and Boat Repair has expanded its fleet with the addition of a Liebherr LRT 1090-2.1 rough-terrain crane, rated at 90 metric tonnes (100 U.S. tons). Delivered to the remote region of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, the crane will support a variety of projects, including construction work, fishing vessel modifications and repairs and lifting fishing gear and other equipment at the docks.

“This crane is by far the newest and most advanced piece of machinery to come to the island in decades,” said Ian Bagley, president, Alpha Welding and Boat Repair. “It will be a tremendous asset to local businesses and building projects in the future.”
The LRT 1090-2.1 was chosen in part for Liebherr’s service support and the crane’s capabilities, both essential for equipment operating in remote areas. The crane features an outrigger monitor that automatically detects the support status and integrates it into the control system. It is also equipped with VarioBase, which allows for flexible outrigger positioning and improves lifting capacity on uneven ground.
The crane’s telescopic boom extends to 47 metres (154 feet) and uses rope pull technology. This system allows the boom to be quickly extended to any length using a two-stage hydraulic cylinder with a rope extension mechanism. Operators can adjust the boom for either maximum lifting power or maximum length, depending on the needs of the project.
With this addition, Alpha Welding and Boat Repair is better equipped to support infrastructure and vessel work throughout Alaska’s coastal communities.
