The hosting of the 2012 Olympics in London will stimulate UK£2.38 billion ($4.1 billion) spent on capital construction projects in the run–up to the games, writes Chris Sleight.

Although many of the venues for the games already exist, the main £225 million ($392 million) 80,000-seat athletics stadium and the £70 million ($122 million) aquatics centre will be built specially for the event.

In addition, bid included the £650 million ($1.3 billion) redevelopment of the Stratford area of east London, which will be the site of the Olympic Village.

A further £800 million ($1.19 billion) will be spent on infrastructure for the games.
