A public debate on the role of abnormal transport in delivering Europe’s green and military agenda takes place in the European Parliament on 15 October.

Members of the European association of abnortmal load transport and mobile cranes, ESTA, are invited to attend.

The High Level Debate is the latest in a series of actions taken by representatives of Europe’s heavy transport industry, including ESTA. It is part of a lobbying campaign striving to ensure Europe’s decision makers and regulators understand the importance of the sector in achieving economic and military goals.

The debate covers work underway to revise the EU Weights and Dimensions Directive which is a key part of regulating the industry, in addition to transport size and weight limits. It will also discuss the EU’s recently published Military Mobility Package which raised the issue of investing in abnormal transport corridors across Europe for use by industry and the military.

The debate will be hosted by Elżbieta Łukacijewska, a Polish MEP, a member of the European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism.

An essential function

Commenting on the event Ton Klijn, ESTA director, said, “With so much happening in Europe and the world at present, we are keen that our political leaders and regulators do not forget the efficient operation of our industry is essential for Europe’s safety and well-being. So this event is part lobbying exercise and part detailed explanation of why the reforms currently on the table must not be overlooked and should be put into force as soon as possible.

“A critical point is the reforms should sit alongside the development of dual use, pan-European heavy transport corridors for both military and industrial activities. We are very grateful to Elżbieta Łukacijewska for her support and making this happen. We are optimistic that this strategy is gaining political support.”

The debate on 15 October is in the European Parliament, Brussels, from 15.00 to 17.00. Attendees will hear from experts about the role of abnormal transport in green investments and military mobility, the impact of abnormal transport on road infrastructure and about the existing barriers faced by the sector. A panel discussion with decision makers and stakeholders will be followed by a question and answer session.

ESTA members or member of an ESTA association who would like to attend in person should send and email to: [email protected] before 7 October, specifying if you need an entrance badge to the European Parliament.
